- Flower of the month: Sunflower
Sunflower
Since summer officially starts this month, we have chosen the Queen of summer flowers as our flower of the month: the sunflower (Helianthus). Did you know that in nature this flower turns with the sun during the day? Or that there are other colours besides yellow? You can find out about all this and more here. You can also enjoy a sunny dose of inspiration for working with this flower. We hope you enjoy reading it!
Heliotropism
It is indeed true that the flower turns with the sun. This is called heliotropism. During the night the flower turns back to the east, so that it's facing the sun again at sunrise. This continues until the flower opens and matures. From then on, the flower keeps facing east. That’s remarkable, isn’t it?
The sunflower’s colours and shapes
The sunflower is known for its yellow flower. But there are also other colours: orange, brown, cream and dark red. There are even bicoloured versions. There are also many different shapes: large or small flowers, multiple rows of rays or with a single row of petals. The flower size can range from 5 to 15 centimetres (small-flowered) through to as much as 15 to 30 centimetres (large-flowered)! Whatever colour or shape you choose, the sunflower always gives a lovely summer feeling.
Sunflower bouquet inspiration
You can combine endlessly with sunflowers. There are some examples below of colourful summer sunflower bouquets. And how about the sunny combination in the blue wicker basket? This basket contains various vases which hold sunflowers, delphiniums, lavender, agapanthus, stock and Echinacea.
