Funeral flowers
When a loved one has passed away, people want to say goodbye in a suitable way. Funeral flower arrangements are a beautiful way to do this. Flowers bring a piece of peace during the funeral. In addition, flowers bring comfort and a token of sympathy to the family and loved ones of the deceased. We attended an Open Funeral Day where florist Leonie Koffeman of Bloem & Bijzaak inspired us with beautiful creations and told us about (making) funeral arrangements.

While it may not involve ghostly apparitions like the legendary Flying Dutchman, this tradition carries a rich history dating back to the 18th century in the Netherlands.

In 1985, A.Heemskerk BV was looking for English-speaking salespeople. Since Hans van Gent had spent six months in Australia, the language was not a problem. He was working in defence at the time and early dismissal was not allowed. As Hans had no knowledge of flowers, he "applied" to Heemskerk no less than eight times. The first time for real, the other 7 to get a day off from defence and join a line, to learn the trade. On the first visit, Hans came to the interview neatly dressed. Everyone at Heemskerk walked in their work clothes, which immediately earned Hans the nickname: "het Heertje".

Styletrend: Gentle Paradox
There exists a significant pressure for achievement within society, particularly felt by the younger generation. When combined with the multitude of crises, it gives rise to a sense of helplessness. This leads some individuals to 'freeze': becoming unable to take action. Taking good care of oneself and clearly setting boundaries is the recommended approach, with 'quiet quitting' standing out as a notable example. In addition to concerns about mental well-being, the tightness of the job market ironically presents numerous opportunities: a Gentle Paradox.

Theme of the month: layered spaces trend
We have discovered in recent years that we can easily transform or divide up spaces. Living spaces were used as offices, childcare facilities or study areas. So rooms were used for multiple functions. This creates a certain layering, with functional furniture. This trend has continued, and you can now see it reflected in flowers and plants as well. We would like explain this and show you some examples.

Our sophisticated shipping system enables us to deliver flowers and plants all over the world. We thereby work a lot with external logistics companies. But florists in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany are supplied by our own drivers. These delivery employees deliver the finest products to florists six days a week. They set off early in the morning with their truck fully loaded. We rode along with delivery employee Piet van der Plas. Piet has been working at Heemskerk Flowers as a delivery employee for about three years. He showed us what his working day looks like. Will you join us?
