What is a Zamioculcas?

Stylish, sturdy and low maintenance
The Zamioculcas Zamiifolia is a tropical plant with feathered, glossy leaves. It grows slowly, stays upright, and asks very little in return — ideal for people who want greenery without the fuss.

Greetings from Zanzibar

Where the ZZ plant grows
Zamioculcas naturally thrives in rocky terrain across East Africa, including Zanzibar, Kenya and Tanzania. Its thick stems store water, allowing it to survive long dry spells and heavy rain without issue.

Buying tips

What to look out for
Look at the number of leaf stalks ("feathers") — count only those at least half the height of the tallest one. Yellow leaves may indicate overwatering or long storage. A few are okay. Black spots on stems are normal. Watch out for strong root bulbs pushing through the pot — a sign it needs repotting.

Care tips

Effortless greenery
Water sparingly. In winter, water every 2–4 weeks; in summer, only when the soil feels dry. Too much water causes yellow leaves; too little causes leaf drop. Feed in spring and summer with half-dosed liquid houseplant fertilizer. No misting required — just dust off occasionally.

Light, space & growth

Slow and steady wins
Place in indirect light or light shade, not in direct sun. The plant may need to adjust to brighter light at first. If growth is too fast, leaves may droop — move it 1–2 meters away from the window. Support long stems with bamboo stakes if needed.

Repotting & propagation

Give it room to grow
Its underground tubers grow powerfully and may break the pot. Repot in spring or shortly after purchase into a pot at least 20% larger. To propagate, cut a stem and plant it in moist soil. Over time, it will form a rhizome and sprout new growth.
